A haven of peace on the hillside

One of the most challenging projects, designed by architecture and design practice SAOTA, can be found in charming and cosmopolitan Cape Town. Located on a ridge below Lion's Head, one of the city's most visited mountains, Clifton 2A is a contemporary family residence, which, with its flexible design, has responded in the best way to the requirements of the steep location. Ensuring 270º views of the Atlantic Ocean, Camps Bay and the Twelve Apostles, this project with an area of 1120 sqm is positioned on an extreme corner site, on a steep, predominantly south-facing hillside, in an affluent suburban neighbourhood. Using a strategy of raising the main level ? comprising the guest bedrooms and secondary spaces such as the gym, study, garage ? so as to create a generous level for the main living areas, this house is raised above the noisy streets, favouring guests with incredible panoramic views, thanks to floor to ceiling glass doors and windows. Generous overhangs, external sliding shutters and steel and aluminium eaves help shade the façades, while the strategically planted trees in front of the house soften the verge and vegetation hides retaining structures.

Indoors, with design by Janine Lazard Interiors, the monolithic stairs, delicately constructed in concrete, like the wall flanking them, taper towards the base. The entertainment room is found to the north of the stairs, with its decorative detailing in copper and natural stone. The family room, kitchen, dining room and lounge are to the south and flow out onto the exterior terrace, flooded with a blue mosaic swimming pool. As for the family bedrooms, on the second floor, the sweeping views provided by the private verandas add a final touch of refinement to this haven of peace and tranquillity.
