Rui da Costa Campos

«The principles of management are universal and cross-sectoral»

\\ Text João Afonso Ribeiro

His CV impresses in the variety of sectors in which he holds, or has held, executive positions of major importance. Rui da Costa Campos is the current chairman of the board of directors of Global Seguros, but also of Banco Keve and also of Recrativo do Libolo ? a team playing in the Girabola league -, in addition to serving on the management bodies of many other companies, some of which are based in foreign countries. From the insurance sector, to the banking sector, or from sport to industry and finance, this multifaceted executive is supported by structures that allow him to maintain control and the guiding line in every post he holds. Trained in business management and administration, Rui Da Costa Campos began his career in finance, but he ended up embarking on general management positions within companies in fields as diverse as the pharmaceutical industry, the financial area, commodity trading and even the beer industry. In 2003 he accepted the invitation to join Banco Keve and, subsequently, in 2005, he joined the team of people founding Global Seguros, which, for the second year in a row, had been considered Angola's best insurance company. A super-manager and a highly versatile executive, Rui da Costa Campos talks about the challenges of cross-sectoral management and about the growth of the Angolan insurance sector, in which ?his? Global Seguros has played an important role.

You are currently Chairman of the Board of Directors of Global Seguros, of Banco Keve, and also of ?Recreativo do Libolo? football club. How do you manage an executive position in three areas that are so different?

And, in addition to the posts you listed, I am also part of eight further management bodies in another eight companies, some of which are abroad. It really isn't easy as you have to be available in various situations. But the principles of management are universal and cross-sectoral. As such, the first golden rule, to be able to embrace the management of a vast range of activities, is strict time management. The second rule is constantly striving to surround myself with specialised teams, with a high level of technical and behavioural skills and openly available. Only then are you able to manage so many projects. Of course, alongside all of this, I am lucky enough to have a very understanding family, in which the prevailing spirit is one where every person, personally, or through their projects, should contribute to the collective good.

Are you a sports fan? Is this the area in which you feel most comfortable as chairman?

I am a fan of sport and of football in particular. Ever since I was a child my father has instilled in me and my brothers a love of football and of sport in general. My paternal grandfather was one of the founders of Recreativo do Libolo, and was also its chairman, in its early years. My father was an athlete at Recreativo in the 1950s. My passion for Recreativo stems from my childhood, when I would go with my friends in Calulo to see the games Recreativo played during the 1960s and 1970s. Being the chairman of the sports club is a unique experience in terms of experience in management matters. There, skills in terms of rigour, focus, openness and interpersonal relations are tested at every moment. It is training school in behavioural skills. I would recommend it for all managers.

How would you describe your role in these three areas: insurance, banking and sport?

At Banco Keve I am a non executive chairman, and therefore I perform the role of chairman, with the operational management taken care of by an executive committee presided over by a CEO. At Global Seguros, I effectively perform the function of CEO, with my role including the operational management of the company. At Recreativo do Libolo, I am the chairman of the board, working as the operational coordinator of sports areas and support for top competition sports the club is involved in, namely football and basketball.

«Global Seguros aims to contribute to developing the culture of insurance in Angola»

Global Seguros has been considered, for the second year in a row, Angola's best insurance company. Is this recognition important?

Of course this distinction makes us feel proud of the work that the whole Global Seguros team has undertaken, but at the same time it gives us the responsibility of continuing to guide our performance according to high standards of quality and competence. The recognition comes from our customers, who see in us a benchmark partner in the insurance market.

When did Global Seguros enter the market and what are its operational principles?

Global entered the insurance market in 2006, with the aim of contributing to the development of insurance culture in Angola.

«It is very important that every one of us can have our risks insured»

What kind of services does it offer?

The company provides its customers with every insurance product in areas that include life, non-life and pension fund management.

What is the main market focus as an insurance company?

We have focused our strategy on being able to offer our customers with suitable solutions and better practice of our market in terms of protecting their assets.

What assessment would you make of Global Seguros, from its beginning to the present day?

From the point of view of production performance, it is without doubt encouraging, as the growth has been exponential. We are now focused on consolidating our portfolio, striving to enhance profitability. In terms of market recognition, we are very satisfied, as there has been much recognition shown by our customers and by the market in general. When it comes to the quality of our team, we have done excellent work there too, whether from the point of view of technical and operational expertise, or from the point of view of behavioural skills.

What do you believe lies behind the success of Global Seguros?

Without a doubt, plenty of sweat and some inspiration. But there's nothing like having a motivated, dedicated and passionate team.

What sets Global Seguros apart from the competition?

Our competitors are seen by us as partners as we are in a phase of developing the culture of insurance in Angola. And to this end, we are all important. In terms of differentiation, more than in terms of products, we strive to establish our difference in terms of service.

How important is a good insurance plan in the development of the normal operations of institutions and of society in general?

It is very important that every one of us can have our risks insured, so that we can smoothly cope with unforeseen events, thus alleviating the negative impact that our planning, whether personal, or of institutions, can come to suffer. Only thus can we construct a more responsible society.

Given the current downturn of the Angolan economy, how do you envisage the evolution of the insurance sector in the country, in the medium term?

The financial and insurance market is faced with major challenges, in particular in the coming years. Nevertheless, we all have to continue making the necessary investments, with a view to contributing to financial education. In times of crisis, the threats are more pressing, but they are also times of great opportunity.

What projects does Global Seguros have within the scope of social responsibility?

We have established our social responsibility programme, which features activities in the areas of sport, culture and health. We have activities planned for the development of training of young people in football and basketball in Calulo, via Recreativo do Libolo, as well as sponsoring cultural programmes and donating to hospitals.

Generically speaking, how do you see the future of the roles you have at Global Seguros, at Banco Keve and at Clube Desportivo do Libolo?

The future implies facing the difficulties of the market in the soundest of conditions, with the commitment and unlimited availability of the members of my teams. I try to pass on the following maxim to all the teams I head: one team, one vision, one champion.
