With the aim of reducing the difficulties of the Eastern Angolan
population, throughout various age groups, the Catoca Mining Company, in
partnership with the Provincial Government of Lunda Sul and the Brilhante
Foundation, has implemented four strategic social programmes that currently
benefit about 3442 people.
These are the Catoca Student, Academic, Young Entrepreneur and Rural Woman Credit programmes, which represent the reaffirmation of the diamond company’s commitment to the economic and social development of the provinces of North and South Lunda and Moxico.
According to the assistant general director for Studies and Projects of the Brilhante Foundation, Flávio Fernandes, the support given aims to meet some of the needs registered during the teaching and learning process within the population, as well as to stimulate better performance in studies, entrepreneurship, and to empower rural women, with the purpose of elevating the region’s development levels.
The manager said that the Catoca Student Programme directly benefits 1500 primary school pupils, with an investment of around 180 million Kwanza.
With regard to the Catoca Academic programme, he says that it benefits 282 higher education students in several universities in the country and abroad, of which 202 are undergraduate students in Angola, 29 undergraduate students abroad, 37 post-graduates abroad and 14 post-graduates in Angola, totalling a budget of 305,923,922 Kwanza, in several areas of training, which reflects the company’s concern for focusing on training residents or natives of the eastern region to take up the challenges that are needed for the development of the country’s eastern region.
Around 60 young entrepreneurs who presented valid projects were reinforced with a loan of 3 million kwanzas from Banco Sol for the various businesses that, in this way, contribute to the promotion of employability.
In the countryside, 1,600 women also benefited from a loan to boost their agricultural activities, with the acquisition of implements and an expansion of the activity, aiming to reduce hunger and poverty. In this programme, Catoca gave out 57 million Kwanza from its coffers.
At the programmes’ official presentation ceremony in the Lunda Norte province, which took place in October last year in the city of Dundo, Governor Ernesto Muangala said that the wealth of a nation is embodied in its human resources. The governor appealed to the beneficiaries to increase the academic profit of the aid they will receive, so that at the end of the training their knowledge may contribute to the development of the province and of the country in general.
The assistant coordinator of the Technical Commission for the emerging programmes of the provincial government of Lunda Sul, Maria Luísa Martins, said that the support was a result of the efforts of the Provincial Government of Lunda Sul to support needy families through the social responsibility of Catoca and the Brilhante Foundation.
Also the director of the Provincial Office of Social Action, Family and Gender Equality she went on to say that the support aims to encourage students to seriously focus on their academic training.
With financial provision from Catoca, the strategic or emergency programmes correspond to Bachelor, Master and Doctorate levels.
