According to the United Nations Children’s’ Fund (UNICEF), around 1.7 million doses of the malaria vaccine are being administered to Liberia, Burkina Faso, Niger and Sierra Leone. In the coming months the RTS,S will reach other African countries, ensuring the vital protection of millions of children who are at risk of contracting the disease. The expansion of the vaccination programme is reaching countries that were previously not involved in the malaria vaccination roll-out programme, which ensures that protection reaches the most at-risk areas in Africa.
In 2021, malaria resulted in 619,000 deaths worldwide, 77% of which were children under the age of 5, predominantly from African countries.
