In Mauritania, advancing desert sands are threatening homes and agricultural land. To fight this scourge, residents are planting a «Great Green Wall» in the hope of slowing the process. The project, which began in 2007 and is being implemented in more than 20 African countries, aims to erect a green wall across the vast Sahel region. One of the challenges is the lack of rainfall. And, so far, only 4% of the original target has been achieved. With time running out, the authorities have started supporting community projects to protect agriculture and the environment. The goal is to restore about 100 million hectares of degraded land by 2030.
