The José Saramago Prize, worth 40,000 Euros, has been awarded to writer Rafael Gallo. His novel Dor Fantasma, which won the prize, will be published in Portugal, by Porto Editora, and also in Brazil, by Globo Livros, and will be distributed in all Portuguese-speaking countries.
The prize was given during a ceremony at the Belém Cultural Centre’s Large Auditorium, in a historical room where the Portuguese State received and honoured José Saramago in 1998, the year he received the Nobel Prize for Literature. The prize should have been awarded in 2021, but the pandemic did not allow it. 2022 was the year of the Brazilian Rafael Gallo, who was born in São Paulo, in 1981.
