The first sailboat made of plastic waste and flip-flops picked up from the beaches, Flip Flopi, will set out on an expedition in Kenya’s Lamu archipelago in order to map the impact of marine litter in the region. During two weeks, the founders of the sailboat intend to evaluate the scope of the waste, at the same time identifying the most common types and the places where it accumulates the most, while also providing support to the communities, offering solutions based on recycling methods. The suggestion even involves adopting a plastic-based boat-building industry. The Western Indian Ocean is one of the places most affected by waste and the expedition plans to conduct research on a stretch of 300 km of coastline, with the support of the United Nations Environment Programme.
